SEO FOR BUSINESS. If you are a business owner then I don’t need to remind you about how much time you do not have for all of the things that you need to do or get done. You are the one person who is constantly thinking about all aspects of your business. Where it needs attention, what issues could become bigger problems and what things that you accomplished last quarter are now creeping back up on you again. The stress is familiar and the pressure never stops. Truth be told though, you would probably miss it all if it went away tomorrow, because you love what you do, the whole process. Here is something that you maybe have never given any thought to. Google is really just a business, albeit probably a little larger than yours, but a business just the same. They actually have customers that they are trying to serve and provide a service to. Their primary service, their main product is producing “search results” to anyone searching anything on Google. We use search engines all of the time now. Google says that over 80% of people now use a search engine first to find something they are looking for. That is quite a number.  It is almost second nature for us now. Think about this a little more, Google “wants” to offer up to you the most relevant search results, to match as best they can what it is you are looking for, based upon whatever it is you typed in. As you are aware, there are literally millions of websites and destinations out on the web. Google needs to be able to give you, very quickly, the best results in the most likely order of those results providing you with the information you are looking for. They can only accomplish this task IF they know what information is out there. The Google bot routinely crawls the entire web and makes an “index” of what it finds. Google needs to be able to tell what your website is about, what services or products or information you are trying to provide. There are several additional things that Google also wants to know about your site and they take this information into consideration as well when they decide how relevant your site might be as a result to a given search term. These are things like; Your website structure. (build platform, layout) Is the website mobile device friendly? (Does it display properly on a mobile device? Google now says that up to 60% of all searches are from a mobile device. Google automatically cuts your ranking score by 50% if your website is not mobile friendly.) Your website age. How many pages does your website have? How much content is on your website? How is that content being presented? Is the content relevant to the subject matter or is it spammy? How Much Do You Pay Your Business Website? Does your best salesperson sell your products or services by just using a “pamphlet” to describe why it is someone should choose to do business with you? Do they just pass out really cool business cards and then wait for people to call at some later time because they really liked the business card? I certainly hope not! If so, then your business is doomed! I am not a sales person and even I would be able to see that would be the case. New clients are not secured from just reading a pamphlet or from seeing a business card. These items are just ice breakers at best and if there is no immediate follow through they both become expensive (for you) trash. There is a need for these items but they are just the first point, or dot if you will, on a long line of “touch points” that need to be navigated towards building trust with a potential client. This is a process towards a relationship, a mutually beneficial relationship. I know that you understand this and the proof is that you still have an alive and breathing business. However, have you ever stopped to consider “what” exactly it is that your business website is being used for? How “should” it be used? How “could” it be utilized better? You see, your business website is just like the pamphlet and the business card; it is a necessary item to have in today’s business world. Instinctively, you know this and that is why you have it, but while it ‘is’ both of those things it can be so much more! It can actually be like, and work as good as, your best qualified sales person. It can make that initial sales touch and also begin building that ever critical relationship to transform a potential customer into a paying client. It has the capability to not only inform a customer about your business, answer their questions and help educate them, but it can also began building up the trust factor towards your business and brand as a whole. You have to think about your website in terms of “it” being a sales person. Just like a real sales person can be kind of general and ho-hum in their sales style, not being very proactive in trying to build a relationship, so your website can be as well. If the content on your site is not very engaging, proactive, or even ‘active’ at all, then it is being just like a mediocre sales person. The most obvious one is that ‘video content’ as a means of imparting information is extremely successful and is here to stay. There are two additional items of note that stand out as well and these you really should pay attention to. The large amount of video content that is viewed via a mobile device. A full ¼ of all views in a day. If you have or know a teenager, then you most likely see them glued to their phone (on YouTube) a significant amount of the time. This take-away points to demographic information that should not be ignored if your product or service is targeting anyone below the age of 30.
